The Stamford Bridge legend, who was sacked from a spell as boss in January 2021, has been out of work since his dismissal from Everton at the start of the year.
Graham Potter was let go by Chelsea on Sunday.
The club have held talks with former Spain Head Coach Luis Enrique and ex Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann but neither want to take the job until the summer.
