Surrey is one of 12 councils outside of London that have been given new powers to fine drivers.

The authorities had to apply to the Department of Transport to be able to issue Penalty Charge Notices for moving traffic offences.

These have historically only been the responsibility of the police.

Louise Thomas from Confused.com is urging drivers to know the rules surrounding things like yellow box junctions and bus lanes.

A spokesperson for Surrey County Council says; “moving traffic enforcement powers can help us to keep road users safe by deterring drivers from committing offences which can create potential dangers for both pedestrians and other road users, as well as causing congestion and interrupting traffic flow.

“We’ll be consulting with local residents and highway users about all potential locations before any cameras are installed.”
