It's claimed spending just £6m a year tackling invasive species in the UK would save the economy £2.7bn
A coalition of environmental groups have called on the government to increase its current pledge of one million pounds. One of the invasive species, the American Mink, is partly responsible for the near-extinction of the water vole. It’s the UK’s fastest declining species, although a campaign is underway to bring it back to the Hogsmill river. The crowdfunder is asking for £12,000. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says it takes the threat these plants and animals pose "very seriously".
