A former Merton councillor is asking for four roads there, named after slave owners, to be renamed.
Peter Walker has asked Merton Council to give their decision at today’s Black History event at Wimbledon Library. He first wrote to bosses, about renaming the roads, in July. He says it’s wrong to allow roads in Wimbledon to still be named after Joseph Marryat and John Sawbridge-Erle-Drax. MP Joseph Marryat lived at Wimbledon House Parkside, owned a large number of slaves and opposed efforts to abolish slavery. Erle-Drax, who owned a big slice of Wimbledon Common, had an estate in Barbados with 189 slaves. An estimated 11 million Africans were transported into slavery in the 1700s.
