There’s a warning of “drastic cuts” in Merton due to the pandemic
The authority is facing a £13m financial hole due to lost income and the costs of shielding. They’re once again calling on the government to provide the funds. The Ministry of Local Government says they’re giving councils “unprecedented” support, and Merton have received £14.6m so far. An MHCLG spokesperson said: “We’re giving councils unprecedented support during the pandemic with a package of £6.4 billion, including £4.6 billion which is not ringfenced and over £1.1 billion specifically to support social care providers. “Merton Council has received £14.6 in non-ringfenced emergency funding across all four tranches. Additionally, their core spending power increased by over £8.5 million in 2020/21 even before emergency funding was announced. “We will continue to work closely with councils as they support their communities through the pandemic.”
