A man has been thanked for taking part in a life-saving study at the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton.
John Sutton, who had a family history of prostate cancer, was monitored regularly as part of the research. He originally had no evidence of cancer but over a few years, markers in his blood were on the rise, indicating he had the disease. He was successfully treated with robotic “Da Vinci” surgery and 15 months later celebrated his recovery with a 140-mile Himalayan trek. Prof Ros Eeles Consultant Clinical Oncologist heading the study says; “We are very grateful to John for taking part in our research studies. There is a close partnership between the ICR and The Royal Marsden to enable discoveries in the lab to be rapidly applied to clinical trials and care. We have established a prostate risk clinic at The Royal Marsden to translate our research advances in prostate cancer genetics. “John’s story shows how the involvement of patients in our research helps us to make the discoveries which we hope will diagnose cancers earlier when they are easier to treat and more likely to be cured.”
