Plain clothes police officers could patrol bars and nightclubs to protect women from being sexually harassed and attacked
It follows demands for better protection of women after the murder of Sarah Everard. Pilot programmes in different areas would involve sending undercover officers into nightspots, looking for predatory suspects. The idea - called 'Project Vigilant' - follows a meeting of the government's Crime and Justice Taskforce, chaired by Boris Johnson. There'll also be increased patrols at closing time. In addition, funding for things like street lighting is being doubled - to £45m. Ministers will be contacting local forces and police and crime commissioners
