Lib Dem Leader Sir Ed Davey says they made gains at the local elections in places they wanted to.

They won seats from the Conservatives in councils including Surrey, which he says are places they can win parliamentary seats from.

However, in London, they consistently came fourth, except in their traditional stronghold, South-West London where they came third.

The Green Party instead became the third party of London.

Sir Ed is pointing to close-run constituencies such as Sutton, to say only they can defeat the Tories.
