Spelthorne Council is “hell-bent” on building on the Green Belt, according to a former councillor who’s just resigned.
Former Spelthorne Green Party leader Jan Doerfel says that the commercial interest of building on the protected land is motivating it. He says that he’s put forward arguments at council meetings, but they were shot down. The new leader of Spelthorne Council, Lib Dem Laurence
Nichols, told Radio Jackie previously that he wants the local plan revised to
“do the minimum possible damage to the green belt, ideally none”. Cllr Jan Doerfel has tendered his resignation from Spelthorne Borough
Council with immediate effect. Cllr Doerfel was elected to Council in
2019 in Staines ward and was the Leader of the Green Party group. A
by-election will, therefore, take place in Staines ward by the 22 July
and further details will be announced in due course. As Leader of the
Council, I am personally sad that Cllr Doerfel has decided to resign.
He has done a great deal to raise awareness of climate change and Green
Belt issues in the Borough and that fight will continue.
The Local Plan has yet to be finalised and voted on by full Council and
we stand by our belief that the housing targets for Spelthorne are
unreasonably high. Looking ahead, the Local Plan is the responsibility
of the Environment and Sustainable Committee under Spelthorne’s new form
of governance.
