A man from Banstead appeared in court via a video link whilst in hospital, earlier this week, for the murder of a policeman.

Louis de Zoysa, 23, is accused of discharging four bullets in a holding cell at Croydon Custody Centre last September, after he was arrested in Norwood following a stop and search.

Sergeant Matiu Ratana, 54, was shot in the chest and leg and was pronounced dead when taken to St George’s hospital.

De Zoysa is suffering from a life threating gunshot wound.

The judge refused bail, remarking that he would be held in prison until the end of the case if he were too become well enough to be discharged from hospital.
