Balham Station is to remain open during morning peak times, after it was due to close for repairs.
It was due to be exit-only until December to refurbish the escalators. However, TfL says that now, one escalator will close at a time, which will reduce capacity but means it can still be used. The operator says queues are likely, and sometimes it may have to be exit-only if it gets overwhelmed. A TfL spokesperson said: “The escalators at Balham are in need of vital refurbishment works to ensure that they can continue to operate safely and reliably. To complete this work, one escalator will be closed at a time, with the other operating from the platforms up to the ticket hall until late December. “Following engagement in the area, we have committed to doing all we can to allow customers to access the Northern line during the morning peak hours via the fixed staircase. As demand at the station continues to increase in the coming months, it is likely that customers will need to queue to enter the station and it is possible that staff may occasionally have to operate the station as exit only. We apologise for any disruption this essential work may cause and will ensure that customers are kept informed on the progress of the work.” The Operator also gives the following alternative travel information: Clapham South and Tooting Bec stations are around a 15 minute walk from Balham and can also be accessed via bus routes 155, 249 and 355 Customers should change at Victoria on National Rail services, or Clapham Junction if they wish to reach Waterloo The hours that the station will be busiest, and may become exit only, are between 07.30 and 09.30 on weekdays
