Figures show the introduction of a controversial cycle-lane in Chiswick has led to a big increase in bike journeys.
The High Court is considering a challenge to the segregated lane which runs along the busy Chiswick High Road and cost £70 million. TFL and Hounslow Council used fast-track Covid rules to introduce the route last December in the teeth of fierce opposition. But figures show cycling up 72 per cent since its introduction, with one in five daytime journeys along Chiswick High Road now done by bike, and collisions also reduced. Hounslow council would like to make the cycle lane a permanent fixture. That may depend on the High Court, which is expected to rule on a challenge to the route from some local businesses in the next few weeks.
