Nearly 86% of Surrey’s recycled waste was processed in the UK last year, compared to just 61% across England.

The county council is trying to stop rubbish ending up in landfill.

Around 500,000 tonnes of waste from homes, recycling centres, fly-tipping and street cleaning were produced in Surrey in 2019 and 2020.

The authority says that if food waste alone had been recycled instead of disposed as rubbish, £3.5 million could have been saved.
