People in Croydon are going to be asked if they want to pick who runs the council
Under the current system, the leader is chosen by the councillors, but a referendum is to be held to ask if a mayor is wanted instead. That person would be voted for by residents. Under each system, the person would choose the cabinet, but a mayor can theoretically be an independent or an opposition member, or give them voices. However, a mayor only needs one third of the council to agree to their policies to get them through, and doesn’t have to resign if they lose a no-confidence vote. The referendum will be held in October.
