The future of Surbiton’s historic Seething Wells Filter Beds will be debated in the House of Lords in the Autumn.
The area is recognised as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. But Kingston’s Lib Dems claim the current owner’s use of pesticides are “destroying wildlife” and biodiversity. In a bid to protect the beds, Lib Dem Peer Lord Jonny Oates, has tabled an amendment to the Environment Bill in the Lords. If successful, it would give authorities the power to enter and protect wildlife sites at risk of biodiversity loss. Environment Minister Zac Goldsmith told the Lords last week that councils already have the power to do this. Lord Oates is now seeking clarification, as the Lib Dems say they don’t believe these powers exist.
