Four new staircases, ticket gates, and a footbridge extension are due to be finished by the end of next May.
Currently, at peak times, the congestion on the stairs means some trains don’t leave on time.
Engineers will begin by removing part of the station building on platforms three and four, but people will have full access to the footbridge and lifts.
