A ceremony will be held at the memorial plinth later for the victims of the Croydon Tram Crash, five years on from the tragedy
More than 60 people were injured, and seven people died. An inquest ruled that it was an accident, and the driver was “disorientated… probably due to a lack of sleep”. There have been calls for further investigations. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says “TfL and I remain dedicated to ensuring all safety recommendations are implemented so a tragedy like this will never happen again”. At the time of the inquest, Jean Smith, the mother of one of the victims, had this to say about the driver.
