Merton Council is considering reducing private taxi use for schoolchildren with special educational needs and disabilities
The authority’s launched a consultation on possible changes to its “Travel Assistance Programme.” The scheme uses taxis, minibuses, council buses and personal travel allowances to transport children with SEND to and from school. It caters for around 750 pupils each day with 475 of those using a mixture of private hire taxis and minibuses. The total spend for the whole scheme is over £6.6 million per year. But the council says it wants to move to “more independent forms of travel” as other authorities do. The consultation is open via Merton Council’s website until January the 5th. Any changes would not affect children who already use the service.
