Parties will come together in the London Assembly later, to fight plans to have London Mayoral elections use first past the post.
At the moment, people are able to vote for first and second choice candidates, but that would change if first past the post was used. The Green’s Caroline Russel and Labour’s Wandsworth Assembly Member, Leonie Cooper, have tabled the debate, saying the current system ensures the Mayor must win a majority. Many Mayoral elections recently have been won by Labour, with some experts saying first past the post could benefit the Tory party. Home Secretary Priti Patel says the change would provide “stronger and clear local accountability”.
