Residents are allowed to claim up to 50 kilos to help them clear frozen footpaths.
Every year around two tonnes of grit is handed out to homeowners, community groups and neighbourhood watch co-ordinators.
The council says although gritting teams are on hand, there are nearly 230 miles of road surface plus 460 miles of pavements to cover.
