Radio Jackie listeners have been giving us stories of their relatives in the war - including a tribute to a former chauffeur for a King
Paul from Merton paid tribute to his father, Bob, who was at Dunkirk. Gary from Tooting called us about his Grandfather, Fred, who was a Queen’s sniper. Samantha from Tooting says her dad used to dance to recover from fighting, and he kept “spinning around” and he was “so funny”. Chris from Chessington wrote in about her partner’s uncle, Fred Kirk, from Kingston. He was born in 1894, and worked his whole life with luxury cars, and served as a driver and mechanic in World War One. In 1936 the company he worked for obtained a custom six litre Buick for Edward the 8th, and Fred became his private driver. When the king abdicated, Fred drove him off. He signed up again for the Second World War, at the rank of 2nd lieutenant. He died in 1940 during a bombing raid at the air base. When a civilian didn’t run for the shelters, Fred ran after her, and the two were both killed when she stepped on a landmine. He’s on the war memorial in Kingston.
