There are calls for the UK to help write off the debt of the global south, to help them respond to the climate crisis.
Streatham MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy is leading a cross-party campaign, and writing to the Foreign Secretary. She says that low-income countries are responsible for very few emissions, while industrial countries like the UK emit many. The foreign office says they’re committed to spending over £11bn on international climate finance, with an extra billion if the UK economy grows. “UK funding has already helped over 88 million people around the world cope with the effects of climate change. To continue this vital work, we remain committed to our five year pledge to spend £11.6 billion on international climate finance, with an extra £1 billion in 2025 if the economy grows as forecast. On top of this we have been working closely with international partners in the G7 and G20 to suspend over $12 billion in debt payments from the poorest countries in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
