Manolo Santana, the first Spaniard to win Wimbledon, has died at the age of 83.

He won the title in 1966, one of his four grand slam titles.

Rafael Nadal says he was a “point of reference, a friend and a person very close to everyone”.

Santana picked up the racket after bringing a meal to his brother at a tennis club, and through his career, fuelled Spanish interest in the sport.
