The victim had agreed over Facebook Marketplace to sell a graphics card worth around £2,000.
He met the buyer outside Tesco in Station Road on Monday at 6.30pm.
On arrival, the male suspect falsely claimed that he had already transferred the money and fled the scene with the goods.
The victim gave chase but was punched in the head multiple times.
The suspect is described as white, with a limp and an Irish accent.
