“Serious failings” in the refurbishment of Fairfield Halls in Croydon mean that the taxpayer will now have to pay the £67.5m bill
That’s according to an independent report. The council loaned its building company, Brick by Brick money to build it, but no written contracts have been found, and the money has now been wiped. The report says there wasn’t “sufficient clarity” and “officers treated Brick by Brick as an extended department of the council”. Current leader Hamida Ali says “over the past year we have transformed the way the council operates”. However, opposition parties are criticising her for not blowing the whistle on it during her time in cabinet.
