Croydon Council has confirmed it hasn’t been asked to take in more unaccompanied child migrants than it does already.
Twenty-nine UK authorities have been told they must share the responsibility of caring for youngsters coming to the UK alone. A voluntary scheme was made compulsory by the Home Office last year. Croydon Council announced last year that it was unable to accept any more unaccompanied migrant children. It cited financial constraints and the fact it has taken in more than 5,000 over the last decade. Croydon Council says it has a “proud history of caring for more unaccompanied children than almost anywhere in the country. “We are already looking after more than three times the number of young people we are expected to.”
