Staines Town Football Club has been divided over the prospect of a tournament for the Traveller community suggested by its owner.

The club, based at Wheatsheaf Park, announced in February that it was planning on holding a daily tournament from April 29 until October aimed at members of the Traveller Community.

Joe Dixon, the owner of Staines Town FC, said that he was keen to start a longer-lasting commitment for an often-misunderstood group of people as part of the event, called The Travellers Community Cup.

Despite having an “overwhelmingly positive response”, the plans have not come without their critics, including the landowner, The Travellers Times and the group Staines Town FC Supporters Club.

However, there are currently no plans to reconsider the event.
