Fears are being expressed that a bridge in East Molesey could become the next Hammersmith Bridge.
Work is due to begin on the 140 year old structure in Esher Road later in the summer, which it’s said has come to the end of its working life. But some has expressed concern than the work, which is due to last a year, will involve closing it 24/7.
Surrey County Council says this is because a full replacement is needed that is designed to last 120 years.
Councillor Steve Bax is urging residents to get behind the works as if it’s found to be unsafe, it may have to close for up to 3 years, like Hammersmith.
He’s asked highways engineers to trial a traffic light assisted right turn out of Creek Road to see if traffic impact can be reduced.
But he says it is short term pain for long term gain.
