Some residents in a part of New Malden say they have been left frightened by recent incidents allegedly involving Thames Water staff.
Several residents in the Groves area have been discovering some unsettling incidents on their webcams and Ring doorbells over recent weeks.
The footage shows workmen with head torches and tools wandering in and out of front gardens in the middle of the night.
Two incidents were filmed by two separate cameras at around 4.30am.
Thames Water has since confirmed leak detection staff, who prefer to work at night when water pressure is typically low, have been working in this area recently, although they are unable to verify the exact footage which also appears to show a Thames Water branded van driving along one of the roads at a similar time.
With regards to the work confirmed as being carried out, when Jackie News asked why the residents weren’t notified by letter beforehand, Thames Water told us;
We don’t put letters through doors for this type of work as
don’t require access to properties and the work isn’t disruptive in terms of
traffic or affecting water supplies. We carry out this important work at
several locations across London and the Thames Valley every night so to send
letters in advance to residents would delay work starting and in turn leaks
being traced and repaired.
The utilities company is urging anyone who experiences anything similar in the future to ask for ID or call the 24 hour customer helpline.
