A cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea is issuing a post-pandemic warning to people with heart disease
Professor Thomas Lüscher has been commenting on research that shows Covid lockdowns increased collateral damage to those with cardiovascular diseases. The University of Leeds-led review analysed data from 189 separate research papers. It looked at the impact of Covid on cardiovascular services from 49 countries covering a two-year period from December 2019. The low and middle income countries saw a more severe decline in hospitalisations for people with heart attacks. Professor Lüscher says the lessons from the review are that healthcare systems have to be prepared for “surprising increases” in acutely ill patients. He also says the public must be aware that staying at home with chest pain or acute breathlessness increases the risk of death.
