Firefighters reckon they managed to save 40 homes from damage after a blaze in Norbury yesterday.

The brigade was called to a grass fire on Turle Road where around seven hectares of wasteland, shrubs and playing fields were alight.

They were alerted at 12:30 and it was under control by 1608; there are no reports of any injures and the cause is under investigation.

Assistant Commissioner Jonathan Smith said: "firefighters worked incredibly hard to save a whole street's worth of houses."
