A temperature control system worth over £400,000 has been installed on Hammersmith Bridge to try and prevent another closure.
The structure has been shut off to vehicles since 2020, but is open to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic. The pioneering system acts as a giant air conditioning unit for the pedestal chains which must be kept under 13C. Once they reach 18C, the bridge must close. With temperatures predicted to hit 34 C next week, engineers say they are working around the clock to prevent this.
