The people of Hammersmith and Fulham have been sharing their memories of The Queen’s long connection to the borough
Her Majesty’s first official visit was in 1946 when the then 20-year-old Princess Elizabeth was guest of honour in Fulham. Children and staff at Burlington School were marking its 250th anniversary. In 1955, The Queen made an official visit to Hammersmith Hospital where she met staff and students at the postgraduate medical school. They were following in the footsteps of her grandfather, King George V, who had opened it in 1935. 42 street parties were held for Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 and a further 36 in the days afterwards. This year, some 45 years later, more than 80 parties were held for the Platinum celebrations.
