Wandsworth Council has launched its own Green Plaque scheme to honour notable residents including a former Prime Minister
Famous people or places in the borough who are not covered by the current English Heritage Blue Plaque Scheme will be celebrated. So far 16 have been installed, including at the former home of post-war Prime Minister Clement Atlee in Putney. He was leader of the Labour Party for 20 years and Prime Minister between 1945 and 1951. Under his premiership the NHS and welfare state were born. His Green Plaque stands on the site of his former home in Portinscale Road. Edward Foster, a dustman from Tooting, is also commemorated; he was handed the Victoria Cross in 1917 for his courage during WW1.
