New research by Kingston University shows foodbanks are evolving to try and end the stigma associated with them
Kingston and London Metropolitan Universities looked at how some foodbanks in Surrey and Sussex are taking a community supermarket approach. This means they are accessible to everyone and there is no “shame” in having to be referred to a foodbank. They found the element of choice in a community supermarket approach also gives clients dignity, by feeling more like a shopping experience. First established in the UK in 2,000 to tackle food poverty, foodbanks have traditionally been used by people experiencing financial difficulty. The pandemic resulted in increased demand, including from people who had never experienced food insecurity previously. New approaches include having a subscription model, where visitors pay £3 or £5 per shop but get food worth more than several times that amount.
