A major new study involving researchers from Kew Gardens has revealed a natural crisis is occurring in the Indian Ocean.
More than 50 organisations worldwide have undertaken a review of Madagascar’s biodiversity. It is one of the world’s hotspots for flora and fauna. But analysis has revealed direct hunting and harvesting have affected over 60% of vertebrate species. Unsustainable agricultural practices have affected more than 55% of vertebrate species and each affect nearly 90% of all plant species. The two new papers published detail a five-part action plan for preserving the future of its biodiversity. These include more investment in conservation and expanded biodiversity monitoring.
