Spelthorne Borough Council "acted unlawfully" when it purchased three buildings outside of the area according to a new report
Independent auditors, KPMG, have been looking at the authority’s finances. Their report relates to the buying of three properties in Hillingdon and Hammersmith in 2017 and 2018. KPMG acknowledges the properties were bought to provide extra income for Spelthorne. But their report criticises an “inexperienced team” and they have given Spelthorne a month to reply to the findings. The purchases were funded through a central Government run loans company for councils called the Public Works Loan Board. The report is due to be discussed at a council meeting this Thursday. The council maintains all actions relating to the asset acquisitions in question have been in accordance with legal advice. It says it also always complied with the existing legislation and guidance for each investment.
