The army could be deployed to help ease possible strike chaos this Christmas
Conservative Party Chairman Nadhim Zahawi says the armed forces may be asked to staff hospitals if health workers walk out over pay. The government says it can't afford above-inflation pay rises. More than 33,000 firefighters and control room staff are voting on whether to strike over pay. Members of the Norbiton-based Fire Brigades Union are being asked if they want to take action over a 5% pay rise, with the ballot closing on the 30th of January. The union's general secretary Matt Wrack says it amounts to a pay cut, with soaring living costs.
