The Wildlife and Wetlands Trust has officially given its backing to the creation of an urban wetlands in Surbiton.
The 14-acre site off the Portsmouth Road known as Seething Wells is made up of a number of former filter beds.
The owners, developers Cascina, were ordered to clean the area up earlier this year by Kingston Council.
It has been 9 years since their plans to turn the site into homes were rejected by the authority and the community.
The land, which is home to more than 70 species of bird and 11 species of bat, has been confirmed as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation.
Residents are now keen to see the area developed into a fully-fledged nature reserve.
