All pupils in England will study maths until they're 18 - under a new plan from Rishi Sunak
He says that's already the case in most other western countries. Around eight million adults in England have the numeracy skills of primary school children. Now the Prime Minister says it's time to 'reimagine our approach' to maths. But his first speech of the New Year's likely to be light on detail - Downing Street says that'll follow in due course, although it doesn't envisage making Maths A-levels compulsory. Twickenham MP Munira Wilson is the Lib Dem’s Education Spokesperson, and says that a plan to start work on it in this parliament and finish it in the next is an “admission of failure”. She adds that a “chronic shortage of maths teachers” will mean there needs to be a “real teacher recruitment and retention plan”. Labour says the PM's failed to show his working.
