Letters from King Edward VIII, whose abdication rocked the royal family, have been discovered at a house in Banstead.
The 14 documents were collected by royalist Lillian
Boraston and found in a box of family papers by her granddaughter. They were written by the then Duke of Windsor’s Private
Secretary and date from June 1937, just six months after his historic
abdication.
One letter refers to alleged misinformation in the
press, reminiscent of the sentiment in Prince Harry’s current memoir, “Spare.”
It states: “His Royal Highness wishes me to add
that quite apart from rumours in the press, it is not very likely that he would
be missing the country which in every possible way, tried to humiliate and
misrepresent both himself and the Duchess of Windsor.”
The Duke had moved to France with his wife, Wallace
Simpson.
The collection is expected to fetch between £300
and £500 at auction at Farleigh Golf Club in Selsdon on February the 8th by auctioneers Catherine Southon Auctioneers.
