Toxic contaminants in fires are directly linked to increased rates of cancer among firefighters according to research published today.
It’s been commissioned by the Norbiton based Fire Brigades’ Union and carried out by the University of Central Lancashire. Over 10,000 serving and retired firefighters took part in the research, which is around 24% of the UK’s total firefighter workforce. 4.1% of participants have been handed a cancer diagnosis. The rate for those aged 35 to 39 diagnosed with cancer is more than 300% higher than in the general population in the same age category. Furthermore, the figures show firefighters are at least twice as likely to be diagnosed with cancer if they notice soot in their nose or throat.
