Croydon Council is going to increase taxes by 15%, after being given special permission to do so by the government
Usually, councils must hold a referendum if they want to hike taxes by 5% or more. However, Croydon declared near-bankruptcy for the third time in November and is asking for more government bailouts. The authority says it needs to do this to avoid cutting services, and will be making a support scheme for the poorest residents. This means a band D property will have to pay £2,230 in the next financial year, when including a £40 increase from City Hall.
