From fast food to jet fuel, Lucy Mayer explains why the next flight you take from Heathrow may be powered by cooking oil.
The airport says it’s on track to become one of world's largest sustainable aviation fuel users. It wants at least 10% of its jet fuel to be made up of cooking oil or even household waste and sewage by 2030. Airlines like Virgin Atlantic and Air France have already pledged to support the airport in its venture. Sustainable aviation fuel can work in existing aircraft without the need for technical modifications. It’s expected to save over 81,000 tonnes of CO2 this year alone. But airport bosses say high costs and low production volumes means it remains in short supply with few able to access it.
