Millions of families in England are facing a council tax rise of just under 5% from April
Research from the County Councils Network shows three in four local authorities are increasing it by the maximum amount. It means the average Band D household will see their bills rise by £99 a year. However in Croydon, it’s going up by 15%, following special permission from the government to do so. The government says authorities should consider money pressure on households but council leaders claim they have "little choice" if they're to protect services. Richmond Council leader Gareth Roberts says on Twitter that it’s a consequence of not funding local government properly. Wandsworth is famed for its low council tax, but is reportedly facing a £4m budget gap even if it were to set the maximum increase.
