The National Crime Agency has successfully recovered gold worth an estimated £4 million after it was discovered at Heathrow.
A shipment of the precious metal, weighing over 100 kilos, was seized at the airport in June 2019. The gold was in the cargo section of a plane which had arrived from the Cayman Islands enroute to Switzerland. NCA officers proved a false paperwork trail had been created to hide the true origin of the gold which had come from Venezuela. They also found those involved in the planning of the operation had links to organised crime. The NCA had to apply to the High Court to obtain a civil recovery order for over 80% of the gold under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The remaining 20% will be returned to companies with a financial interest in the gold.
