Merton Council says it will not be renaming any streets that have historic links with the slave trade
Nevertheless, councillors are asking residents how they want those links recognised. A public consultation has been launched so people can voice their opinions about how the roads in question should be acknowledged. Three of the roads are all in or around Wimbledon Village; Drax Avenue, Maryatt Road and Burghley Road. Residents are being asked if they’d like a QR code installed under the street signs which will link to their online history. Other proposals include plaques, booklets and an exhibition detailing the particular roads’ links with the slave trade. The council says for private roads, like Drax Avenue, the outcome of the consultation will only be a suggestion. The consultation is running until May the 31st.
