Spelthorne Council is “setting the record straight” on its recent commercial acquisitions after receiving criticism.

It says a loss of government grants since 2016 means it has a £5m annual budget deficit.

Therefore, it has purchased 11 commercial properties to rent bringing in an estimated annual net return of nearly £10m.

The authority says income generated has helped fund food banks and allowed it to set council tax increases at below inflation for the last three years.
