There are calls for Merton Council to act to keep English schools open in the borough

Wimbledon School of English say they have contacted the council asking for business rates relief, but they’ve been turned down each time.

The council reportedly says that the school isn’t covered by the relief, but the government advice asks them to “use discretion”.

They’ve now set up a petition to pressure the council into action.

Jane Dancaster says other councils have given relief to the English language sector.

We’ve contacted Merton Council for comment.
