Several species of mammal in Surrey are in danger of becoming extinct
The Mammal Society has published its “red” danger list which includes the hedgehog, water vole and Hazel dormouse.
Leatherhead based Wildlife Aid Foundation has recently re-released 200 young hedgehogs into the wild.
The charity says these mammals have the breeding potential to add 35,000 animals to wild hedgehog populations within a decade.
But they say funding has “dried up” during lock-down and the only way more mammals can be reintegrated, is through donations.
It costs the charity £1,800 a day to operate its hospital and rescue service which is open 7 days-a-week.
